Checking Out The Kickin’ Pig in Rock Hill, SC

Last weekend I went to check out the hog butchering day at Historic Brattonsville (which was a completely fascinating experience).  On my way there, I passed what looked to be a hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint.  I made note of it. Then on my way back I decided to pull in and check it out.  This is The Kickin’ Pig.

I would definitely call this place a dive.  It’s a very small hole-in-the-wall type place.

As you walk in, you immediately get the vibe of a joint.  Two pool tables sit at the front of the building, with tables interspersed throughout.  As I walked in and went to my seat, the owner immediately came over and introduced himself.  That was a nice touch since he looked fairly busy at the moment.  I sat down and ordered a small BBQ plate.  When asked which sides I wanted, I said, “Surprise me.”.  A few minutes later, out comes the plate… (sorry, I didn’t get a picture of the beans)

The pork is a chopped pork.  Usually when I get chopped pork, it’s either super moist or completely dry.  In this case, the pork was completely moist!  Right on the money!  No sauce needed for this pork.  The hush puppies were a classic hush puppy recipe — nothing crazy going on here, and that was fine by me.  I wouldn’t have minded there being some larger chunks of onion in there though.  The beans had a nice bold flavor.  Excellent beans!

Don’t let the interior fool you; this place is a hidden gem in my opinion.  If you’re passing through Rock Hill, you have to check it out!
