The KCBS competition season in the Carolinas officially kicked off on April 20th in Kings Mountain, NC with the Kings Mountain Firehouse BBQ Cook-Off. Nestled on the grounds of the walking track at the Kings Mountain Fire Museum approximately 35 minutes west of Charlotte, this event regularly draws some of the best teams in the region. This year was no exception, as 2012 reigning KCBS Team of the Year 3 Eyz BBQ made the trip down from Maryland to compete for a portion of the $10,400 prize money along with 54 additional teams, including regional juggernauts such as Two Old Men and a Grill and Checkered Pig.
One of the highlights of my Memphis in May trip was meeting fellow blogger Robyn Medlin Lindars and her dad. While there, Eddie and I talked about cooking together later in the year. In November, I finally had the chance to cook with Eddie as a member of North-South Smokers in Conway, SC at the 2012 St. Nicholas Winterfest.
Hello everyone! I just received the email below from the National Barbecue Association calling for entries for the 2013 Awards of Excellence. If you have a BBQ product (rub, sauce, marinade, gadget, tool, book… anything), this is a great competition to enter with potential nationwide exposure!
Hope everyone has had a great weekend! Today I wanted to write a quick post about one of my favorite giveaways that happens this time of year. This is the time of year where BBQ boys and girls need to be extra good, because BBQ Santa is coming to town!
Last weekend one of the most prestigious sets of BBQ competitions took place – the American Royal Invitational and Open contests. Going to this contest has been on my BBQ bucket list ever since getting into the world of BBQ. Until I get to do so, I’ll just have to live vicariously through others. Big Al of Canadian Bakin’ BBQ Team wrote about his experiences competing at the contest last week. Today I’m absolutely thrilled to present a new perspective about the American Royal experience. Let’s check out “My American Royal” by Jesse Black of Thermoworks.

Day 3… the day of reckoning. This is the day when the gloves come off, and teams get down to the business of preparing turn-ins for their respective categories. I arrived on-site around 8:00 am, and I must say our hog was looking really, really good!
With day 1 of Memphis in May in the books, it’s time to move on to day 2. The arrival this morning brought the delivery of the hogs to use for the whole hog cooking contest as well as the finishing of brisket for the beef turn-in.
