2014 Jack Daniels Teams Announced

Selections have been announced today for the 2014 Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbecue.  This competition, affectionately known as “The Jack”, is an invitation-only contest that pits championship BBQ teams against one another on the grounds of the Jack Daniels distillery (“The Hollow”) in a cook-off to determine BBQ supremacy.

My First MBN Contest – What I Learned

As most of you know, I am a KCBS certified judge (and almost 2/3 of the way to my Master CBJ certification).  KCBS events are fairly easy to find here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  However, Memphis Barbecue Network (or MBN) contests are a little bit harder to locate here.  So when I saw that the Q-City Charlotte BBQ Championship (formerly known as the Time Warner Cable BBQ & Blues Festival and as the Blues, Brews, & BBQ Festival) was looking for both KCBS and MBN judges, I decided to apply.  And lo and behold, I got picked!

I’m in Hot Water Now, or My Attempts at Cooking Sous Vide and Grilling Together

A few weeks ago, I was asked to participate in a sous vide BBQ Blogger challenge.  The objective was to come up with a recipe where the main component started out in a sous vide machine and finished on the grill/smoker.  Sure, why not?  So a few days later, I received this beauty in the mail from SousVide Supreme!  A huge thank you goes out to the folks at SousVide Supreme for asking me to be in this contest!

KCBS Competition Season in the Carolinas

The KCBS competition season in the Carolinas officially kicked off on April 20th in Kings Mountain, NC with the Kings Mountain Firehouse BBQ Cook-Off.  Nestled on the grounds of the walking track at the Kings Mountain Fire Museum approximately 35 minutes west of Charlotte, this event regularly draws some of the best teams in the region.  This year was no exception, as 2012 reigning KCBS Team of the Year 3 Eyz BBQ made the trip down from Maryland to compete for a portion of the $10,400 prize money along with 54 additional teams, including regional juggernauts such as Two Old Men and a Grill and Checkered Pig.

Cooking in the SCBA

One of the highlights of my Memphis in May trip was meeting fellow blogger Robyn Medlin Lindars and her dad.  While there, Eddie and I talked about cooking together later in the year.  In November, I finally had the chance to cook with Eddie as a member of North-South Smokers in Conway, SC at the 2012 St. Nicholas Winterfest.
