First off, to everyone who sent out thoughts and prayers for my mother as she had a very major surgery… I give my heartfelt thanks and gratitude. Her surgery was successful, and after a week’s stay in the hospital, she is finally back at home. It’s going to be a long recovery for her, but I know that she has the will to persevere.
While in Mississippi, I was able to make the trip up to Yazoo City to see some of my all-time favorite people — Leslie Roark Scott and Garry Roark of Ubon’s BBQ.
When I walked in the door, it was instantly like I was home. I was greeted warmly by both Leslie and her dad Garry. While we sat and talked about life and all things therein, I struggled to decide what to order. Ultimately (thanks to some persuasion by Leslie), I went with the combo plate (big surprise) with beans and sweet potato fries. And as the waitress went back to the kitchen with my order, Garry yelled to the waitress, “Throw a couple of ribs on there too!” Not long thereafter, out came the BBQ. Holy cow, what a plate!!
There was brisket. There was chicken. There was sausage. There were ribs… and sweet potato fries… and beans… and what you don’t see in that picture underneath that sweet pile o’ meat is some of the most delicious pork I’ve ever put in my mouth! Everything was absolutely delicious!! The ribs were cooked perfectly, as was the chicken and sausage. The brisket, while not a Texas style brisket, had a tasty beefy flavor. Not dry at all! None of the meats needed any sauce, even though their BBQ sauce definitely made things taste much better.
And as for the sides… the beans were delicious. But those sweet potato fries… Oh. My. Goodness!!! Needless to say, I made a happy plate…
Thanks to Heath Scott for this picture. You rock!!
And then someone said “banana pudding”. That was when the foodgasm came complete circle. I’ve had their banana pudding at Memphis in May, and it was every bit as tasty that day as it was in Memphis.
One of the neat things about the restaurant is that the walls are covered with writings and autographs. I spotted my good friend Danielle’s doodle on the wall from her visit there while taping BBQ Crawl. And now I’m proud to say that Big Wayner will live on in the walls of Ubon’s…
If you are within driving distance of Yazoo City, Mississippi, it is well worth the trip to Jerry Clower Boulevard (Highway 49) to get some of the tastiest BBQ that the Magnolia State has to offer!
