BBQ Pitmasters — the TV show often credited with the rise in the popularity of BBQ in recent years — makes its return this Saturday on Destination America at 9pm EST for a brand-new season. This season features teams from the various hotbeds of BBQ — Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Memphis, Kansas City — competing for a spot in a final cook-off with an ultimate prize of a $50,000 cash prize and a guaranteed entry into the Kingsford Invitational. This season leads off with the Georgia episode where three teams — Rescue Smokers, The Rolling Grill, and Heavenly Hawgs — go head-to-head to move on.
In case you needed another reason to tune in for the season premier on Saturday, Destination America is offering a chance to attend one of Myron’s cooking classes. More information can be found here.
Returning for another season at the judge’s table are BBQ titans Myron Mixon and Tuffy Stone. Myron, known as the winningest man in BBQ, is the pitmaster of Jack’s Old South Competition Bar-B-Que team and the author of two recently published cookbooks: Smokin’ with Myron Mixon and Everyday Barbecue. In 2013, Myron was honored as an inductee into the Barbecue Hall of Fame.
Tuffy Stone is the pitmaster of Cool Smoke and the founder of Q Barbecue (with 4 locations in the Richmond, VA area). He has won 37 grand championships and has recently won two of the most prestigious contests in the same calendar year by winning the 2013 American Royal Invitational and the 2013 Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbecue.
Joining Myron and Tuffy this year at the judge’s table is a pitmaster who should be very familiar to both BBQ fans and viewers of previous seasons — Moe Cason of Ponderosa BBQ.
Once again, Big Wayner’s BBQ Blog will be following along with this season and posting episode recaps and analyses. In the past two seasons, Shane Draper of Draper’s BBQ and I have published the Unofficially Official BBQ Pitmasters Drinking Game. Well it’s back for another season as well! And in case you missed it, here are the rules…
1. Take a drink for every time Myron swears.
2. Take a drink every time there’s trash talking.
3. Take another drink if the trash talking is between judges.
4. Take a drink for every mention of “flavor profiles” or “injections”.
5. Take two drinks every time the judges trash an entry.
6. Take a drink when a judge completely finishes a sample.
7. Take a drink for every butter sighting. If it’s “squeeze butter” or Parkay, take another drink.
What are you hoping to see in this season?
