Sometimes a sauce catches your eye, and you just can’t help but try it out. So when Chris from InsaneChicken asked if I would be willing to review some of his sauces, I was very glad to do so. He sent me multiple hot sauces as well as a couple of BBQ sauces, and one of those caught my eye. And when you see the picture below, you’ll understand why as well. Let’s check out Obama’s Health Care BBQ Sauce.
InsaneChicken, Inc. is located in Norwell, MA. Founded in 2003 by Chris and Alison McCarthy, the company offers up a wide range of hot sauces, BBQ sauces, and other specialty items. They also offer a Hot Sauce of the Month club that has been featured on the Food Network. In addition to selling items from a variety of vendors, they also offer their own line of hot sauces and BBQ sauces. Their Fire Roasted Habanero Hot Sauce was awarded first place in the 2011 Scovie awards in the extreme sauce category.
The label on the sauce is very whimsical, with a caricature of President Obama very prominent. But don’t let the label fool you… this sauce has a serious list of ingredients. Those ingredients are as follows: ketchup, honey, mustard, molasses, chipotle peppers, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, onions, brown sugar, liquid smoke, hot sauce, garlic, and spices. Those who are opposed to high fructose corn syrup will be pleased with this ingredient list. Yes, there is liquid smoke in this sauce. However, the overall taste of the sauce does not have a strong liquid smoke flavor.
A sniff test reveals a blend of molasses aroma with hints of tang, spice, onion, and smoke from the chipotle peppers. This sauce pours out very thick, and it is a chunky sauce. A taste test reveals a very pleasing blend of sweet, tangy, and spicy.
To the Meat of the Matter
This sauce was just asking to be used on some chicken. My wife picked up some boneless skinless chicken breasts from Baucom’s Best during a trip to the farmer’s market. I have to say this was some of the best chicken I’ve tasted. Not only was the meat superb, but the sauce added just the right balance of flavors to enhance the chicken and not overpower it. Even my wife, who is super-picky about sauces, really enjoyed this one.
I also tried the sauce on some stuffed burgers. It gave the burger a nice color, but it did not enhance the flavor of the burger quite as much as it did the chicken. That’s not necessarily a detriment, but it just is what it is.
So don’t let the funny name fool you. Obama’s Health Care BBQ Sauce is packing some serious flavor. This is a sauce I highly recommend! The sauce is available for purchase from the Insane Chicken website.
