Contest Recap: 2012 BBQ Capital Cook-Off — Lexington, NC

This weekend was an off weekend for me, so I decided to go and check out the 2012 BBQ Capital Cook-Off in Lexington, NC.  This contest is about an hour from where I live.  This contest featured 50 teams from all over the country (and the world, but I’ll get to that later).

Last year I had the privilege of helping cook in this contest with my friend John Shepard from Sir Porkalot BBQ.  While I may not have been with a team this year, that did not make this contest any less enjoyable.  I got to catch up with fellow judges who were judging today.  I also had the opportunity to meet fellow blogger Derek from The “Q” Review as well as visit with some friends who were competing (such as Rob Marion from 2 Worthless Nuts).

This contest also featured a team from Australia!!  In speaking with them, I learned that a contest was held to find the best grillers in Australia, and the reward for being selected was coming to the US to compete!

It was also a chance to visit with one of my favorite sauce makers – Nephew’s BBQ.  Not only was Paul slingin’ sauce, but he was also competing in 2 categories today – ribs and chicken.

Oh yeah, and this small show called BBQ Pitmasters was filming their season finale there.  I know who the teams in the finals are, but I’m not telling.  Needless to say, you will be pleased.

And, of course, who am I to miss an opportunity to converse and get a picture with the Man in Black himself?  I also got to meet and greet with Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue, one of the judges on this season of BBQ Pitmasters.

On to the results… a special congratulations goes out to my friends Darrin and Donna Vasseur of D&D Hickory Hogs for their 1st place in ribs and 4th place overall!  Screamin’ Nite Hog BBQ took Grand Champion, with Smoke This taking reserve by just over a point.  The top 10 overall results are below as well as the top 10 for each category.
